KENNER, LA (WVUE) - All lanes are open on I-310 and I-10 West past Williams Boulevard after an accident and fuel spill shut down the interstate Friday afternoon, snarling the commute and backing up traffic for miles.

The driver of the fuel truck was cited for careless operation. He told police that the accident, which happened at about 2 p.m., was caused when he blew a tire. No injuries were reported.

Police say the compartment contained about 2,500 gallons of fuel and close to three-quarters of that spilled.

Cleanup crews spent hours mopping up fuel. Emergency officials say they flushed drainage lines to get the residue to the canal. Workers put down buoys to contain the gas that made it in. They say it will take a few days to assess how much got into the canal, but officials anticipate it's minimal.
