Eight-year-old drowns near old Pontchartrain Beach site, police say

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans police are investigating a drowning near the site of the old Pontchartrain Beach that claimed the life of an eight-year-old boy. The drowning was reported Saturday around 3:13 p.m. in the 2000 block of Lakeshore Drive.

According to police, investigators learned that the boy was swimming with his family near a boat that was anchored offshore. The boy reportedly removed his life jacket before going under water. Shortly afterward, he was found unconscious. CPR was performed on the boy by members of both the New Orleans Fire Department and EMS. He was brought to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:29 p.m.

The boys identity will be released after an autopsy is performed by the Orleans Parish Coroner.
