Neighbors say they're fed up with brazen car burglaries
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Some New Orleans East residents say they keep getting hit by brazen car thieves. We talked to neighbors who say their cars have been targeted right in their driveway and also during broad daylight on Waverly Drive.
We're told there's now crime cameras in the neighborhood. But one homeowner says that doesn't seem to stop the break-ins from happening. She says her family cars have been hit three times, including last week when it happened right before her eyes.
"We would like it to stop because we work for what we have and it's not safe, because when they attempted to go into my son's car I reacted and I could have gotten hurt, and it's just a natural reflex to say, 'Hey!' And I came running saying, 'Hey what are you doing in my son's car?' And, they took off, you know, so we would like it to stop. A little more patrol around the neighborhood would help," said neighbor Deirdrea Hazure.
We reached out to New Orleans Police about this story. They tell us there have been five reports of car burglaries on that stretch of Waverly in the last two years. In the two most recent incidents that happened this month, police say there was no forced entry into the cars.
The NOPD adds they take every call seriously and they will continue to work with neighbors to bring the perpetrators to justice.
