CUT OFF, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a two-car crash in Cut Off that left one man dead. The crash occurred Friday, just after 7 p.m. on LA 1 near West 75th Street. The deceased victim has been identified as 58-year-old Jeffrey Pitre.
According to police, 23-year-old Michaela Hebert of Larose was driving south on LA 1 while Pitre was traveling north on the same stretch of road. As Hebert slowed down and began making a left turn, her vehicle was hit by Pitre's.
Pitre was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and suffered serious injuries. He and a passenger were brought to Lady of the Sea Hospital by EMTs. The passenger suffered minor injuries. Pitre was later flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans where he was pronounced dead.
Hebert was wearing her seat belt and did not receive any injuries.
Investigators do not believe that impairment played a role in the crash. A breathalyzer test showed that Hebert did not have any alcohol in her system. Detectives later learned, on-scene, that just before the collision, Hebert was distracted by her cell phone.
The investigation into the crash continues.
