NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - After one rider got hit with nearly $1,000 in fines the city could move to change how people register their bicycles.
Last month a man who owed $920 dollars in fines was cited for not registering his bicycle, traffic laws, along with use of improper lane and bike equipment.
Kevin Louis said he didn't know he even needed to register his bike.
"If I can spend $85 or something, and not have to worry about it, I'm going to do that," Louis said. "I went online saw it was $920 and was like, oh, no. That is ridiculous."
Registering a bicycle costs three dollars, but only seven bike shops partnered with the NOPD to get bikes registered.
Even then, residents have to have bought the bike from that same shop.
The Transportation and Airport Committee meets at 2 p.m. at City Hall.
