The incident happened at the I-10 West exit at Morrison Road.

The interstate was closed for about an hour between the Read and Crowder exits as part of this investigation, according to NOPD.

Police say five people were in a car traveling westbound when an unknown occupant in another vehicle opened fire. The vehicle left the roadway onto the service road before stopping.

NOPD said three victims have suffered gunshot wounds.

According to NOPD, the three victims include a 2-year-old with graze wounds to the shoulder and sternum, a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to the leg, and a 22-year-old with a gunshot wound to the leg and forearm.

NOPD said an adult female and 3-year-old juvenile female were also present with the victims at the time of the shooting incident, but did not suffer injuries.

The victims were transported to an area hospital via EMS for treatment of injuries, none of which are believed to be life threatening.

Chief Michael Harrison arrived at the hospital shortly after learning of the incident and met with each of the victims, according to NOPD.

The car appeared to have hit a tree and a fence off the I-10 service road, stopping just before a canal, according to the report.
