JEFF DAVIS PARISH, LA (WVUE) - A woman accused of killing her husband who worked for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office was in court Monday.

Shantel Wagner faces a second-degree murder charge. The motions hearing began at 1:30 pm.

JPSO sergeant Troy Smith's death was first reported as a suicide.

Investigators went to the couple's Waggaman home June 17, and found him with a single gunshot wound to the head.

He died a week later. Last month Wagner was arrested.

Detectives said forensic evidence and interviews showed the gunshot was not self inflicted.

The lead investigator testified in court that Wagner said she and her husband had an argument the night he died. According to the investigator, she told police she went inside when she heard a gunshot.

According to the investigator, surveillance video showed that there was an argument between the two and Wagner left home, then went back inside shortly after.

The investigator also said there were inconsistencies in Wagner's account of what happened, including the position of the gun.

The investigator testified that he wanted to re-interview Wagner and found her at the insurance division.
