NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans Police say a vehicle crash near the Lakefront Airport early Saturday morning has left one woman dead.
Police received a call about a vehicle crash in the 6000 block of Stars and Stripes Boulevard around 2:15 a.m.
When NOPD and New Orleans Levee District Officers arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles at the scene. One vehicle was a dark colored Infiniti coupe with minor damage and the other vehicle was Nissan Altima with what police described as catastrophic damage.
Crash scene investigators say a man and a woman were involved in a verbal altercation at their residence when the male left in his vehicle. The female jumped into her vehicle and followed him. During the pursuit, the female struck the male's vehicle causing both of them to lose control. The female's vehicle went on to the neutral ground where she struck a pole and a tree before coming to a stop.
Emergency crews at the scene had to extract the woman from the vehicle. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The male driver was taken into custody for further questioning and testing for possible impairment.
Police say the investigation into the crash is ongoing and no charges or citations have been issued at this time.
The name of the female victim is being withheld at this time. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the victim's name along with the official cause of death upon completion of an autopsy and family notification.
