After Further Review: Five things to key on in Saints matchup with Chargers

First team offense

With so much talk surrounding the backup quarterback, we haven’t spent a whole lot of time talking Drew Brees. Tonight, he’ll play for the only time this preseason. Knowing Brees, he’ll want to look sharp and score as many times as possible. Given how well the offensive line looked last week, I’d expect some efficient play out of this group against the Chargers.

Marcus Davenport

No brainer here. The first round pick will make his preseason debut against the Chargers. Davenport has missed valuable time and needs as many reps as possible to get himself into NFL shape. I’m very curious to see how many snaps he plays tonight and how well he does.

Boston Scott

With each practice, the chances of Scott making the roster look better and better. He’s a guy that never looks lost and makes plays when asked. He’s also gotten better in the return aspect of his game. Another solid effort would only solidify his chances of making it.

Reserve offensive linemen

Rick Leonard, Cameron Tom, Will Clapp and Josh LeRibeus have all gotten significant snaps this preseason. You can make a case to keep each one of them. I’m just not sure all of them will make the team. Depending on how the numbers shake out, one or two of these players could be cut.

Austin Carr

Lost in the mix of last week’s loss was the solid play of Carr. He followed that with a decent two days out west. I’ve said many times that Carr’s skill set is the closest to Willie Snead or Lance Moore, which is something Sean Payton likes in his offense. The problem is, before the game against the Arizona, he had a very quiet camp. If he can finish strong though then maybe he can catch on.
