What does Derek Carr’s contract look like with the Saints

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A big question mark entering the 2025 season, do the Saints keep Derek Carr as the starting quarterback. Who they hire as the head coach could have a big say in that final decision.

The Saints went 0-7 in games Carr missed in the 2024 season. Spencer Rattler went 0-6 as the starter, and Jake Haener was winless in his only start.

Earlier in the week, Carr said he wouldn’t take a pay cut, but would work with the team on a possible contract restructure. So let’s dive into his contract with the Black and Gold.

This upcoming season, Derek Carr will be entering the third year of a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints. Here’s what his contract will look like if they cut him this offseason, or decide to keep him in the Black and Gold.

If the Saints keep him:

2025

- $51 million cap number

- $30 million base salary

2026

- $30 million cap number

- $40 million base salary

If the Saints cut him:

2025

$50 million dead cap space; save $1.3 million

2026

Off the books completely

The team just suffered its worst season in 19 years and missed the playoffs for a fourth consecutive campaign.

The four-season stretch of missing the playoffs is the Saints longest drought since the early 2000′s, when they went five consecutive seasons from 2001-05 without making the postseason.

They won four consecutive division titles from 2017-20.
