NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Essence Fest kicks off in a couple of days, but organizers say ticket sales are down this year.

Despite that, New Orleans businesses are preparing for a big economic impact.

Austin Levy, owner of Biscuits and Buns said, “For us, it is an infusion of cash and it helps out big time. It helps keep everyone whole during the summer.”

This is the third year Levy has partnered with Essence. He’s expecting lots of guests from across the country.

“Get to see a lot of celebrities and cool people like that,” Levy said.

Kelly Schulz with New Orleans and Company says hotel occupancy is at 80 percent going into this weekend.

“I think hotel occupancy is down slightly, compared to previous years, but we’re not concerned. We’re looking forward to a great weekend,” Schulz said.

Schulz said 80 percent is still a strong number and notes that some visitors opt to stay in rental housing or with family or friends.

“Especially for Fourth of July weekend,” Schulz said. “I think many cities would love to have an Essence Fest in their city.”

According to Dillard University, Essence 2024 generated an economic impact of $346.3 million for the New Orleans area. On average, each attendee spends more than $3,100 and stays four days, the study found.

“This event has really grown, with many different curated events for attendees,” Schulz said. “There is a beauty con, film festival, authors event and much more. It continues to grow in popularity and what it offers.”

A spokesperson for Essence said, “Ticket sales are currently pacing behind 2024, a year that broke records for Essence Festival of Culture as we celebrated our 30th anniversary and welcomed Vice President Kamala Harris during a high-stakes presidential election.

“This year, shifts in programming affected the rollout of key announcements, which impacted early ticket momentum. That said, we are seeing strong engagement now that our full lineup has been unveiled. Our focus has always been on delivering a culturally resonant and purpose-driven experience, and we are confident this year’s festival will reflect that in every way.”
