City council overrides Mayor Cantrell’s veto on Charity Hospital, French Quarter trash funding
Mayor Latoya Cantrell vetoes $20 million appropriation from the Wisner Trust Fund designated to redeveloping Charity Hospital.
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans City Council voted Thursday morning to override two recent vetoes by Mayor LaToya Cantrell, restoring key funding for the redevelopment of Charity Hospital and French Quarter trash services.
The council overrode Cantrell’s veto of a $20 million appropriation from the Wisner Trust Fund that had been designated to support the massive redevelopment of the long-vacant Charity Hospital.
The historic building has remained unused since Hurricane Katrina.
Council members expressed frustration with the mayor’s decision, noting that her administration had previously signaled support for the project.
“This project will be a mix of housing, retail, and medical operations to bring jobs to the shell of the building,” Councilmember Joe Giarrusso said. “We’re already into this project because we understand its global importance.”
The council had already allocated $10 million for the redevelopment and said the additional $20 million is critical to advancing economic development in a key part of downtown New Orleans.

Mayor Cantrell did not attend Thursday’s meeting. Requests for comment from her office have not yet been returned.
The council also voted to reverse another veto that had affected trash services in the French Quarter. Details on that vote are expected to be released later.
