(CNN) - The Pentagon has scheduled its first major test of the Golden Dome Missile Defense System, President Donald Trump’s vision for a multi-billion-dollar space-based shield that can protect the entire United States.

Trump said once the Golden Dome is constructed, it will be capable of intercepting missiles from anywhere.

According to two sources familiar with the matter, the phase one test is set up for just before the 2028 election, which lines up with Trump’s pledge in May to “have it done in three years.”

The Missile Defense Agency would carry out the testing, but did not return CNN’s request for comment.

The sources said dozens of companies are vying for a role in developing Golden Dome, including SpaceX.
