Thousands to paint New Orleans red at annual Red Dress Run Aug. 9
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Thousands of runners and non-runners dressed in head-to-toe red will take over the streets of New Orleans on Aug. 9 for the city’s annual Red Dress Run, a charity event organized by the New Orleans Hash House Harriers.
The event, which has become one of the city’s most colorful traditions, begins at Armstrong Park and winds through the French Quarter and surrounding neighborhoods. Registration is $65, with proceeds going directly to local charities. Participants must be 21 or older.
While billed as a “run,” the Red Dress Run is as much about celebration as it is about fitness. The two-mile course is punctuated with beer stops, live music, and a post-run party that lasts well into the evening. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., and kegs will be flowing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Organizers encourage pre-registration online, which comes with a $4 processing fee, but day-of sign-ups will be accepted for cash only. Early bird registration includes entry into Armstrong Park, a commemorative gift for the first 3,000 sign-ups, and access to food from local restaurants.
Those not up for the run are still welcome to join the festivities, as long as they wear a red dress. Spectators often line the streets to cheer on participants before heading into the French Quarter for an afternoon of revelry.
The New Orleans Hash House Harriers, known as a “drinking club with a running problem,” host the event each year on the second Saturday in August. The group keeps exact run routes secret until race day, adding an element of surprise for those taking part.
Organizers strongly recommend rideshare, taxi, or public transportation due to street closures and heavy foot traffic. Additional details, registration links, and donation information can be found on the New Orleans Hash House Harriers’ website and social media.
