ICE detains 14 people at Kenner boat launch after complaints
KENNER, La. (WVUE) - 14 people are in ICE custody after an encounter at the Kenner boat launch Friday night (Nov. 7).
A spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the 14 people were detained because of their immigration status. ICE will not say whether anyone faces charges or deportation.
Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said the operation took weeks of planning and came after years of complaints from neighbors of unruly behavior, littering, loud crowds, and weed-smoking at the launch.
Conley could not confirm whether any of the people in custody were the “bad actors” he has received complaints about over the years, but he said neighbors of the launch should feel safer.
“We just have to set the tone that we are not going to tolerate this kind of lawlessness,” Conley said. “It’s the broken window theory in law enforcement. If you let the small things come in, then the larger things are right behind it.”
