Woman accused of elder abuse, neglect in unlicensed group home in Algiers, NOPD says
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans police arrested a woman Monday (Nov. 24) accused of mistreating elderly occupants of an unlicensed group home she was operating in Algiers.
Nona Burton, 65, was taken into custody from the house in the 3900 block of Sullen Place, police said. The NOPD said Burton was booked with five counts of abuse and neglect of adults.
Police said officers responded to the house after a call requesting a wellness check of its occupants. They arrived to find “multiple elderly individuals residing inside an unlicensed group home which was operating under poor living conditions,” the department said in a statement.
One neighbor who did not want to be identified said, “She was trying to help people when this started and she got overwhelmed.”
That neighbor also said Burton and another person wanted to help the residents.
“They bring them a meal every day, they supply food in the house, but you have people who are not mentally active or physically active,” the neighbor said.
Raymond Owen lived at the group home. He said he is not surprised by the police presence.
“I’m glad because it sounds like they’re going to get much more attention,” Owen said.
The NOPD said three occupants of the home required ambulance transport for medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital, while another was “relocated to a separate medical facility.”
A fifth occupant “had been previously transferred to a local hospital,” the NOPD added.
